(TOT) - The Six Signings To Change Tottenham
I have always been a massive advocate for my club's transfer policy. Sign young players and develop them into stars, and we have done that very well over the years whether it be Gareth Bale, Luka Modric or Dele Alli, in fact there hasn't been a moment in my lifetime where we have signed a finished product. You would have to go back to Jurgen Klismann in 94' or 97' to find us signing a world class player.
However there are several issues with this now, most notably price. It used to be cheaper to sign younger players but now it has been flipped on its head and you still have to pay way over the odds. For example Chelsea's recent spending, Caicedo for 115 million, Enzo for just under that and so on. The market has changed as these players never used to cost as much. The other issue with this policy is that our squad is relatively young and we don't need extra youth, we need some older players to compliment the inexperience.
I have drawn a list up of six names that I think could change Tottenham for the better. I have considered price, the need for homegrown players and youth integration. So let's get started...
Target #1 - Sam Johnstone
The Englishman is in the prime of his career so maybe it might take some convincing to join us given he is playing regular minutes at the Eagles but with Crystal Palace having already signed Dean Henderson, it would make sense that they would eventually faze out the older keeper, Johnstone is 31, 4 years Henderson's senior. I believe with midweek Europa League football it is a possibility he could move and be a very good backup for the squad.
Target #2 - Kyle Walker-Peters
This transfer makes the most sense out of the lot. With Emerson probably out of the door we need a backup full back and who better than someone who has been at the club before. Not only does he fit the criteria for homegrown players but he himself is a spurs fan.
Target #3 - Ben Mee
I struggled on this one as I wanted someone who is homegrown, experienced and left footed. Mee has been in the top flight for an age now and deservedly so. Signing him would be cheap and could definitely help the younger defenders whilst also providing solid backup to the unmoveable starters.
Target #4 - Joao Palhinha
As I stated in one of my previous entries, we need a top defensive midfielder to release the other midfielders to create but the issue is they aren't many around. Palhinha makes sense as he is experienced and is good in both getting forward and cutting up play. He is a player of good enough level where if it goes wrong, we would easily get our money back for him.
Target #5 - Viktor Gyokeres
Someone we should've signed last year but now he will cost us probably four times as much. A deadly number 9 with excellent holdup play that we are missing. Probably the hottest property on the striker market at the moment but there is valid reasoning behind it. If we spent big we would end up with the third best striker in the world right (in my opinion).
Target #6 - Paulo Dybala
Now I appreciate this is a dream signing of mine for years but if want to get to the next level 12 million euros is not a lot to advance us. His versality is crucial as we could play him as ten, up top or as a winger. He would help keep the argentine duo of Lo Celso and Romero happy and would also sell a tonne of shirts. No brainer for any top club. The only risk is his injury record but that is why we have squad depth.
If we want to advance as a team replacing our deadwood with these players could be the turn of good for our club. I believe we will not need to spend loads due to our outgoing players and so this won't be a really expensive window even if it looks like on paper. Also, crucially, it is important to introduce our youth players into the squad at every given opputuinty and midweek football will massively help us with that. The mix might just create something really special.
Thanks for reading.
With Love
